The individual is responsible for many aspects of microbiological laboratory work, including performing analyses, client relations, quality control, inventory, and scheduling of laboratory personnel.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology (or closely related field)
  • Hands on laboratory experience
  • Knowledge and demonstration of sterile technique and pure culture maintenance
  • Proven problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English (Spanish capabilities a plus)
  • Flexible work schedule (including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays)
  • Able and willing to travel for extended periods


  • Utilize cultural and rapid methodologies (e.g. real time PCR, petrifilm, etc.) to identify pathogens, indicators, and spoilage organisms in fresh produce, water, and environmental swabs
  • Interacting with clients by communication test results, answering questions, and sending sampling supplies based on their needs
  • Developing, maintaining, and measuring processes to increase the accuracy of turnaround time to results
  • Ensuring implementation of the QA/QC program with regards to all operations and documentation requirements
  • Managing the microbiology laboratory staff relating to job training, as well as coaching and mentoring to facilitate the staff’s professional growth
  • Provide technical dialogue regarding industry research, outbreak data and correspondence with customers and academic resources
  • On occasion, travel to satellite laboratories for extended periods to assist with laboratory coverage
  • Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Director of Microbiology and/ or the Laboratory Director
  • Clean Driving record of 5 years is required when applying for this position
